Why Our Family Said No to Unlimited School Technology and Chose WCA Instead

Our family moved here from Atlanta and our children were in a school district with a 1:1 laptop policy. Technology in schools is so innovative, right? This is the most cutting-edge education, right?
Only…my husband and I weren’t sure that a laptop was right for my 11-year-old. We weren’t sure that was suitable for his current maturity level. And, as a family with 5 teens and tweens in the house, we weren’t comfortable with this huge influx of technology that we weren’t sure how to adequately supervise. Before our children were given laptops, we had a desktop in the kitchen that everyone used openly in a shared space. Suddenly, the legislature decided that our kids could have portable computers that could easily be slipped into a bedroom when a parent was making dinner (or already asleep). We didn’t have parental controls installed on those laptops; how were we supposed to know if they were being monitored appropriately? This “one size fits all families” technology policy might have been great for a different family, but it didn’t feel right for us.
We were so happy and relieved when my husband took a job in Florida, and we enrolled our kids at Warner Christian Academy. We found that the school has lots of technology, without overriding the parents’ rights to make decisions about what works in their own home. When a teacher wants the students to use a laptop for a lesson, a laptop cart is brought into the room, the students complete an assignment under the teacher’s supervision, and then the laptops are returned to the cart. In addition to that, the classrooms, even at the elementary level, are all equipped with Smart Boards, so our kids were getting access to education that was supplemented with illustrations, videos, and hands-on computer projects, while still letting us decide what technology our kids were ready to use independently.
At Warner Christian Academy, we found a school that partnered with us instead of replacing our role as parents. Our children still benefited from engaging, technology-enhanced learning, but in a way that felt intentional, supervised, and age-appropriate for our family. That balance gave us peace of mind.
If you’re looking for a school that values both innovation and parental involvement, we would love for you to come see Warner Christian Academy for yourself. Sign up for a campus tour and experience the classrooms, community, and culture firsthand.
